Soft and Misshapen Awkward Attempts stems from Santina Amato’s series Between Body and Object, conceived during the pandemic. This large-scale, site-specific sculpture was built over two months using domestic furniture and handmade biomorphic forms. Created directly within the exhibition space, the work physically could not be removed once completed—its destruction was inevitable. Supported by a 2023 New Work Grant from the Queens Arts Fund (NY, USA), the project expands Amato’s ongoing exploration of the tension between control and surrender, construction and collapse. The sculpture’s physical constraints, too large to exit through the door, echo the emotional and spatial confines of domestic life, particularly during isolation. Through this work, Amato reimagines the interior as both a site of creation and entrapment, where the act of building becomes inseparable from the inevitability of decay.
