Between Body and Object was developed during the COVID-19 pandemic while Santina Amato was an Artist in Residence at 4Heads Portal on Governors Island, New York, NY. The series places domestic furniture in direct dialogue with biomorphic, organic forms made from humble household materials such as recycled junk mail, garbage bags, flour, toilet paper, and glue. Emerging from a moment when life was confined to the home, the work reflects on the collapse of boundaries between labor, rest, and survival. Amato’s sculptures transform the detritus of domestic life into living, bodily forms that appear to breathe, sag, or strain against their structures. In doing so, she reimagines the domestic interior as a porous site, where the body merges with its surroundings and the ordinary becomes uncanny. Between Body and Object is both a meditation on containment and a quiet resistance to it.
Amato has been awarded a 2023 New Work Grant, by the Queens Arts Fund, NY, USA to develop new work in this series.
